Harappan civilization is of significance because -

Most of the settlements were located along the Indus (Saraswati) river , that is why it is also known as Indus valley civilization.

Its area of spread was more than any of its contemporary civilizations .

It belongs to Holocene geological era ie 2350BC - 1750BC or 2600BC - 1900BC. (Mature Harappan phase)

Construction of houses through burnt bricks , wattle and daub and rammed earth indicates that they were good in that.

Archaeological evidence such as pottery (complete , broken or rivetted),Tools ( made up of stones and bones of dead animals ), seals , sealings , inscriptions , sculptures, remains of grand palaces and temples , etc. provide valuable information about that period .

Unearthing of 2 Mesopotamian seals at Mohenjodaro indicates trade activities . Also tools made up of lapis - lazuli which are found in hilly areas of baluchistan region signify commercial contact between the communities.

At Mohenjodaro, Well established town - planning , Drainage System and large constructions such as The Great Bath and the great granary indicates the level of sedentariness that the harappan people celebrated alongside their consideration towards proper hygiene and management .

The Shiva of Indian Hindu Mythology has been identified with proto-shiva or Pasupati Mahadeva of harappan period (The only made God whose figurine have been unearthed ).

The presence of citadel complex at various sites of the civilization indicates the practice of social distinction among classes based upon Socio-economic status or profession .

Harappan script is the oldest script discovered so far in the Indian subcontinent but it has not been deciphered yet.

Harappan people were unaware of IRON , made tools mostly of locally available stones and bones of dead animals. They also had no idea about the existence of HORSE.
