During the breathing cycle, when air is taken in and let out, the lungs always contain a residual volume of air so that there is sufficient time for oxygen to be absorbed and for carbon- dioxide to be be released. What does this line means? Class 10 Science Chapter 6 pg 104.

Hii..
This line says that oxygen needs time to get absorbed through the tri layer (lung basement membrane and blood capillary membrane)so lungs are not emptied at that time hence a residual volume of air is present at that time..

hope this helps!

This is to prevent the lungs from collapsing. The lungs must always have some residual  volume to ensure that there is sufficient time for oxygen to be absorbed and carbon dioxide to be released.
