During the period of Chola rule, temples were considered as an honor for the kingdom. More and more temples were built during that time. Thanjai Periya Kovil is considered as the most influential work of the Chola dynasty.

Temples were constructed for many other purposes rather than being as just a place for worshiping. They were built to improve the rule of the kings. The temples that were built were used as fortresses, treasuries, gathering place, celebrating festivals, learning place. More than the above mentioned, it is believed that temples were built to serve as a bank.
