The chemical reaction for electrolysis of water is given by:

2 H₂O ⇒ 2 H₂ + O₂

From the chemical equation, we can conclude:

2 moles of Hydrogen and 1 mole of oxygen is produced from 2 moles of water.

Thus mass of hydrogen obtained = mass of 2 moles of hydrogen

                                                         = 2 mole x 1 g/mole = 2 g

Mass of oxygen obtained = mass of 1 mole of oxygen

                                             = 32 grams

According to question,

x = mass of hydrogen / mass of oxygen

                                           = 2/32

                                           = 1/16

Now, Volume of hydrogen obtained = 22.4 L/mole x 2 moles

                                                              = 44.8 L

Volume of oxygen obtained =22.4 L/mole x 1 mole

                                                = 22.4

y = Volume of hydrogen/Volume of oxygen

  =  44.8/22.4

  = 2
