During electrolysis of water, it is acidified with Sulphuric Acid (H₂SO₄) as distilled water is used which has no free ions in it. As we know, free ions can only conduct electricity, the addition of Sulphuric acid in water brings those free ions by which we can pass the electricity. If water is not acidified, it cannot conduct electricity and thus, cannot be electrified.
