During British colonial rule, the permanent settlement consolidated the zamindari system in undivided India. The British also rewarded supportive zamindars with the status of princes and awarded them titles. The zamindars were used for the collection of taxes by the British, a part of which was given to them by the colonialists. Because of this cosy and mutually beneficial relationship, the zamindars often sided with the British.

Zamindars is known as land owner. They control over their peasants from whom they have right to collect tax. During the British rule the zamindars has the responsibility to deposit the money in state treasury bill so they make peasants to work hard to make more money. If zamindars are not able to collect more revenue then a new zamindars was chosen by British in his place and then they will have no home , no food and no shelter to live.
