shortage in France. While Marie Antoinette never said this, the public believed it

due to their perception of her spending habits and her disconnect with the general

There was a law in France back then that if a baker ran out of the cheapest bread, he had to sell the next more expensive bread (brioches) at the same price. Of course the bakers did not like this law.
