Explanation:

  • At the moment when roads were emerging back from the medieval era, the "British canal water transport system" played a crucial role in the UK Industrial Revolution. Britain was the first country to create a national canal network.
  • The boarder with the East cities was connected by waterways and by the increasing railway network. Produce travelled from farms to ports on small boats along rivers and canals. Huge steamships transported goods & people from port to port. Railways also extended to connect cities, offering everyone a faster transportation.
  • Good communication was necessary to transfer raw materials to factories and finished goods to the customer from the same factories. Not only to UK customers, but all over the British Empire 's expanding region. Roads were also being designed and strengthened, however bulky & heavy  materials such as carbon and steel, or fragile & delicate  materials such as potters could not be easily handled. Roads could  not compete with water, as well.
  • The navigable rivers of the United Kingdom were at that time more than 1000 miles, however the problem was that they no more traveled to the right places. The "industrial north & the Midlands" were not linked to the market south or ports that could export their products. Two waves of canal construction were centered between 1759 to the beginning of 1770s and between 1789 & almost the end of the 18th century. By the late 18th century the surge had ended; by 1815, most British canals had been completed.
