I'll throw in for Edward III. He had to fight for his own authority against his mother and her lover, and he and his queen had a huge swarm of children who would go on (for better or worse) to propagate the Yorks, Lancasters and Tudors. His reign saw the beginning of the Hundred Years War, and his victory at the Battle of Crecy would set the tone for more than 200 years. It was during this time that English as a language really came into its own; up to this point French was the primary language of the nobility, but during Edward III's reign it became more widespread and you began to see native English literature (e.g. Chaucer).

While I don't think many people would argue that Edward III was a "good guy," he does exemplify pragmatism and a certain smart ruthlessness that a king needed to be effective in that era. Edward had five sons, including Edward the Black Prince and John of Gaunt, and none of them challenged him or conspired with his queen (Philippa) against him the way Henry II's sons did with him. Edward was very popular, and founded the Order of the Garter, membership of which is considered the epitome of English chivalry. It's still given to this day, more than 650 years later.
