this is because the material to be electroplated must get the coating of the other metal.in this process anode looses te ions and cathode gains it.so it is necessary to keep it in cathode

when current pass through the solution then the solution breaks down into its ion cu+ and so4-.As we know that opposite charge attract each other so,positive charged cu(copper)gets deposited over cathode and negative charged so(sulphate) over anode.
