Lord Dalhousie expanded the territories in India is the following way; 

Doctrine of Lapse.

Under the Doctrine of Lapse, the British occupied all the states that did not have a natural heir or were accused of misrule. By this, the British annexed the states of Jhansi, Nagpur and Satara. This empowered the British in India which eventually led to colonisation.
