Lord Dalhousie was the governal general during the revolt of 1857.He was a part of few major causes that led to rise of first war of Independence.
He had annexed many Indian States to the Company using Doctrine of lapse.
According to this Doctrine , the adopted heirs without any consent of British could inherit only private property of the previous ruler not his terittory, which will directly come under company's rule.
This doctrine caused resentment for Rani lakshmi Bai as her adopted heir will not be recognised as a succesor to throne.
The Doctrine also applies that the titles and pensions of some states will be taken away Titles like Nawabs of Carnatic and Tanjore were removed.Nana Saheb the adopyed son of Baji Rai II , by this doctrine was denied off his pension , which led him against British. It has caused resentment among other rulers as well .
The people of India considered this not as Doctrine of Lapse but as 'Lapse of all morals'.
