During the Sports Day in a school, a Potato Race was organized. Five friends, Sunny,
Jenny, Peter, Patrick and Ritz had to hop and reach the finishing line. The rule was that the
students had to jump 5 steps forward and then 2 steps backward. If there were 9 steps between
the starting and the finishing point, how many jumps did each one take to reach the finishing
line?

Answer:

The correct answer should be 18 jumps.
Here’s the explanation:
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 1 - 1 = 5 - 2 = 3 (7 jumps)
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 - 1 - 1 = 3 + 5 = 8 - 2 = 6 (7 jumps)
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 6 + 4 = 10 (4 jumps)
7 + 7 + 4 = 18 jumps.
We make a total of 10jumps and not 9 as it says ‘between.’ So we count the first one but exclude the last one. Thus, we add 1 more.

I hope I have helped you!
