During the Sultanate period the Mughal gave out land grants by the King or Sultan in the form of Iqtas.
The Iqtas are referred to as an ancient practice of tax farming and have been known to be wrongly translated from a European word fief.
The Iqtas however did not hold heredity status and had to be confirmed with the king or sultan.
