Answer: The electron transport chain which is also known as the Z-scheme comprises of step-wise excitation of electrons and occurs in two photosystems i.e., PSI and PSII, derived from light harvesting. These photosystems are closely linked to each other, because the electrons excited from PSII transfer to PSI by electron mediators, and are re-excited in PSI for the reduction of NADP+ into NADPH.  Therefore, every electron excited from PSI is being ultimately replaced by the excited electron from PSII.
