The establishment of Panchayats subsisted in India even throughout the classical times. But at the time of the British rule, the association of Panchayats weakened. The main purpose for this was that the British did not believe in these ancient systems so they designated new administrators to look into the activities of the people. This led to the deterioration of the age-old establishment of Panchayats.
