Answer:

Kumbhaka (Retention)

After regulated inhalation, the air is retained for a certain period of time (Antar Kumbhaka). Bahya kumbhaka is when the breath is held for several seconds after the exhalation is complete. This is often used in meditation and bandha practice.

Answer:

Yogis noticed early on that how we breathe affects how we think.

Choppy breath equals inefficient, crazy thinking.

Clam, deep breath equals a calm, centered mind

And so pranayama is the fourth limb of yoga.

Once the body is healthy and purified (Asana or the 3rd limb)...

And life in general is purified (Limbs #1 and #2, restrains and observances like: non violence, clean speech, no lying)...

Then we are ready...

Once ready pranayana means extension of the life force.

Cultivating a deep understanding of how the breathing is connected to vitality and also to how our mind works.

The key to pranayama is in the stages

Cleansing the body (intestines, eyes, stomach, breathing channels)

Understanding, elongation and smoothing of the breath

RETENTION of breath. with bandha (or internal energy locks I.e.: slight tightening of the pelvic floors muscles (like the perineum)

Deeper retention after inhale and after exhale.

The techniques are very precise and take quite sometime to understand, let alone master.

When the breath is arrested the mind is arrested too.

Then we are primed to access the fifth limb: sense withdrawal.
