Explanation:

The carpet is beaten with a stick to remove the dust particles. When the carpet is beaten with a stick,the fibres of the carpet come in motion and hence,move forward. On the other hand,dust particles remain at rest due to inertia of rest. Therefore they fall down.

Initially the dust particles are at rest along with the carpet. Beating the carpet with the stick makes the carpet to move but the dust particles remain at rest due to inertia at rest, thus the dust gets detached from the carpet.
