When the aging star has a mass less than 8 times the mass of sun they lose outer layers of gas in stellar winds.
The remaining hot core starts to emit ultraviolet radiation which then ionizes the surrounding gas resulting in gases glowing in bright colors.
This burns for another billion years to come until all fuel is exhausted.
