The dynamic programing approach for solving multistage decision-making problems is presented. A general formulation is given followed by models of deterministic, stochastic, and adaptive versions of a particular multistage decision-making problem.

Seventeen subjects participated in a computer-controlled multistage decision-making task, intended for testing the adaptive model. Group and individual decisions are analyzed in terms of both an adaptive and a nonadaptive model. Extensions of the adaptive model, by adding different environmental and personal constraints, are outlined briefly.
