Indigenous sources are those available within the country describing various spheres like culture ,religion,administration etc. e.g Vedas etc. Where as the foreign literary sources are those historical accounts written by the foreign writers like Indika by Megasthenes.

The indigenous literature may be divided into a number of varieties, e.g. religious text, secular text biography, poetic writings and regional literature. It must, however be remembered that literary writings when patronized by the king's court is likely to be an exaggerated one.

They provide a more reliable information and insight about the life of the people of the period. These sources inform us of the administrative set up of the rulers, their theory of kingship, military achievements etc. They also reflect the state of cultural, economic, political and religious institutions
