I'm confused, whether it is [Ar]3d10,4s1 or [Ar]4s2,3d9
Can someone explain me how....

Answer:-

Electronic configuration of Copper is [Ar]3d¹,4s¹ .

Explanation:-

Copper has ten electrons in 3d orbitals rather than 9 orbitals as expected.

The reason is that fully filled orbitals and half filled orbitals have extra stability.

The fully or exactly filled configurations like , p, d⁵, , f⁷, are thus, more stable.

Hence, to acquire more stability, one of the 4s electron goes into 3d orbital so that the 3d orbital gets completely filled.

So we can say that the actual electronic configuration of Copper is :-

1s², 2s², 2p⁶, 3s², 3p⁶, 3d¹⁰, 4s¹

∵ Ar = 1s², 2s², 2p⁶, 3s², 3p⁶

Thus, we can write the above configuration of Copper as :-

[Ar]3d¹,4s¹

Required Answer :-

[Ar] 3d¹⁰ 4s¹

Explanation :-

In copper

\sf \begin{cases} \bf Ten \; electron \; of \; 3d \end{cases}

Now

The configuration of copper is

\sf Ar = 1s^2 ,2s^2,3s^2,2p^6,3p^6 = 3d^{10}, 4s^1
