There are three types of people in the world, but only two types really matter. According to many self-made millionaires, people can be grouped into us and them. Then there are the irrelevants, whom by definition, don’t figure into many decisions.

More telling is that until the final act, the conclusion of an endeavor, and ofttimes not even then, unless self-made millionaires confide in you, it’s sometimes impossible to determine who fits into which category from their point of view. Many of the very wealthy channel Michael Corleone in saying, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.”

Those individuals most self-made millionaires categorize as us tend to be few in number. They may be loved ones or close business associates and dear friends. A high degree of trust usually characterizes the relationship with those who fall into the us category. Those who fall into the them category are individuals the self-made millionaire views as either resources to use as long as they are useful, or obstacles to overcome. Compared to the number of people in the us category, the number of people in the them category tends to be significantly greater.

The barrier between us and them is sometimes permeable. This fluidity can prove advantageous or damaging. It’s easy for someone in the us category to inflict great harm, and it’s far from uncommon. Such actions immediately convert one of us to one of them. Then there’s the proverb, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” which describes situations in which one of them becomes one of us, usually only for a specific purpose – to team up against another one of them.
