Separating solids from liquids – filtration

  • For example, sand does not dissolve in water – it is insoluble. Filtration is a method for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid. When a mixture of sand and water is filtered: the water passes through the filter paper (it becomes the filtrate )

Answer:

By sedimentation

Explanation:

  • Sedimentation is a process based on gravity, thereby allowing the heavier particles (soil) to settle down and the clear liquid (water) is collected at the top phase.
  • The heavier particles that settle down are called the sediment.
