Explanation:

• Bama was in her 3rd grade when she became aware of the indignities which the lower caste people faced. It took Bama 10 minutes to reach her home after school; however she would dawdle along, watching the entertaining oddities and novelties in the streets. Bama would gaze at the bazaar and shops enjoying the scenes in the street and hence, she would take at least an hour to reach home.
• One day Bama saw an older man on her street, holding the parcel off his body, carrying a packet of tadais and walking peculiarly. Bama found his manner of carrying the parcel very funny.  
• Later, Annan told Bama that the man was not being funny when he carried the package by the string for his landlord. The people of upper caste felt other people should not touch them. They would be tainted if they did. That is why he (the oldest man) had to carry the package by its string.  This provoked and angered Bama.
