1. A car moves 100 m due east and then 25 m due west.
(a) What is the distance covered by the car? (b) What
is its displacement?
2. A person walks along the sides of a square field.
Each side is 100 m long. What is the maximum
magnitude of displacement of the person in any
time interval?
3. In the hare Vortoise race, the hare ran for 2 min at a
speed of 7.5 km/h, slept for 56 min and again ran for
2 min at a speed of 7,5 km/h. Find the average speed
of the hare in the race.

Answer:

1. (a) 125 m (b) 75 m

2. 100 m

3. 0.5 km/h

4. 40 km/h

Explanation:

1. Distance = 100 m + 25 m = 125 m

Displacement = 100 m - 25 m = 75 m

2. The maximum magnitude will be 100 m as it the longest distance the person can go without changing it's direction

3. Total time = (2 + 56 + 2) min = 60 min = 1 h

First distance = 7.5 km/h × 2/60 h = 7.5/30 km

Second distance = 0 km/h × 56/60 h = 0 km

Third distance = 7.5 km/h × 2/60 h = 7.5/30 km

Total distance = (7.5/30 + 0 + 7.5/30) km = 15/30 km = 0.5 km

Average speed = 0.5 km / 1 h = 0.5 km/h

4. Average speed = 320 km / 8 h = 40 km/h
