e) The foot of a ladder is 9 m away from its wall, and its top reaches a window 12 m
above the ground.
(1) Find the length of the ladder.
(ii) If the ladder is shifted in a way that its foot stays 12 m away from the wall, to
what height does its top reach?​

Let AC be the ladder and B is the window

(i) AB2 + BC2 = AC2                                  (Pythagoras theorem)

12^2 + 9^2 = AC2

144 + 81 = AC2

225 = AC2

AC = 15m

Therefore, length of the ladder is 15m

(ii) Now we know that ladder is 15m and BC is 12m so we have to find AB

(see figure ii)

AB2 + BC2 = AC2  

AB2 = 225 - 144

AB2 = 81

AB = 9m

Therefore, it will reach a height of 9m
