The original name of the present-day Cotton Collegiate School was Guahati Seminary.
- The school was set up after Captain Francis Jenkins collected money from the townspeople for the educational institution
- The school started operations in the year 1835 and had fifty-eight students in its first year
- English was given special importance, along with history and literature as focus points
- Many notable Assamese individuals owe their lives to the institution; notably, Anandram Barua, who was the first Assamese to be a part of the Indian Civil Service, and Zalinur Ali Ahmed and Sibram Bora, who were the first Assamese individuals to be part of the Indian Medical Service
- The institution was declared as a collegiate school in the year 1865 and was renamed the Cotton Collegiate School at the cusp of the twentieth century
