The narrator, i.e Dr. Watson, had been observing Mr Mortimer Tregennis for a while and he he had discovered that Mr Tregennis's controlled excitement was even greater than the obtrusive emotion of the vicar. Dr.Watson also noticed that he sat with a pale, drawn face and an anxious gaze fixed upon Holmes. His thin hands clasped convulsively together, his pale lips trembled as he listened to the dreadful experience that had befallen his family and his dark eyes seemed to reflect something of the horror of the scene.
