Answer:

If you have intuition on what HCF and LCM are then this is fairly a simple one.

For any two integers : product of the two integers IS EQUAL to product of their LCM and HCF.

now in our scenario :

a x 18 = 36 x 2

a = 4.

If you want the proof for this, then you should know about prime factorization first.

Proof :

For suppose A and B are two integers and they can be prime factorized as following : (x= multiplication; ^ = power; p, q, r, s are prime numbers)

A = p x p x p x q x q x q x q x r x r = p^3 x q^4 x r^2

B = p x p x q x s = p^2 x q x s

then HCF = p x p x q = p^2 x q

and LCM = p x p x p x q x q x q x q x r x r x s = p^3 x q^4 x r^2 x s

now compare A x B and HCF x LCM. Are they equal ? :)

Hope this helps.

The lcm(a,18) is 36, so a must be a factor of 36: a can be 2, 4, 6, 9, or 18.

The hcf(a,18) is 2, so a must certainly be an even number less than 9, so a is either 2, 4, or 6 but not 8 because 8 was not one of the factors of 36 we listed above.

To figure out which one it is, we go back to the lcm. If 18 is divisible by a, then 18 would be the value of the lcm and not 36. Think about it: lcm(2,18) = 18 and lcm(6,18) = 18, but we were told that lcm(a,18) = 36, so a cannot be 2 or 6.

If a is 2, 4, 6, 9, or 18, but can't be 9 or 18, and can't be 2 or 6, then a must be 4.
