Each of the resistors shown in the figure (32-E11) has a resistance of 10 Ω and each of the batteries has an emf of 10 V. Find the currents flowing through the resistors a and b in the two circuits.

Explanation:

(a)  According to the figure,  

Two resistor ends have the potential difference, which is a = 10 V.

Resistor’s resistance is a =10 Ω

Therefore, the current passing through a = 1 A

Two batteries are linked to each other oppositely.

Among the b terminals = 10 – 10 = 0 V

Therefore, the current passing through b is 0 A.

(b)  According to this figure, between the resistor’s two ends a = 10 V.

Resistor’s resistance a = 10 Ω

Therefore, current passing through a is 1010 =1 A.

Again, two batteries are connected opposite to one other,

Between terminal of b the potential difference = 10 – 10 = 0 V

Therefore, the current through b is 0 A.
