2. Why are fires produced by burning oil not extinguished by pouring water ?
3. What happens when wood is heated in absence of air ?
4. State the reason why copper metal is less reactive than iron ?
5. Can Zinc metal displace copper from copper sulphate solution ? state the reason.
Answers
1)These oxides differ from metallic oxides because they are acidic in nature. Nonmetallic oxides react with water to form acids. Therefore, Sulphur dioxide is acidic in nature. Magnesium oxide is basic in nature.
2)Why are fires produced by burning oil not extinguished by pouring water? Water is heavier than oil. So when it is poured on an oil fire, it sinks to the bottom where it evaporates due to heat of the fire and thus expands rapidly due to which it may push and splatter fire in all directions.
3)When wood is heated above 270° C it begins a process of decomposition called carbonization. If air is absent the final product, since there is no oxygen present to react with the wood, is charcoal.
4)Iron displaces copper from its solution. Therefore, copper is less reactive than iron. Copper does not displace any metal therefore it is the least reactive.
5)Zinc metal can displace copper from copper sulphate solution because zinc is more reactive than copper. Copper cannot displace zinc from zinc sulphate solution because copper is less reactive than zinc.
Answer:
5)Zinc is more reactive than copper.A more reactive metal can displace less reactive metal, but less reactive metal can not displace more reactive metal.
