Hi ,
Let the side of the square flower
bed = a = 2m 80cm
a = 280cm
Width of strip = w = 30cm
New side after extension of
flower bed = a + 2w
s = 280 + 2 × 30
s = 280 + 60
s = 340 cm
Area of enlarged flower bed
= s² - a²
= ( 340 )² - ( 280 )²
= ( 340 + 280 )( 340 - 280 )
= 620 × 60
= 37200 sq cm
Area of the new square = s²
= 340²
= 115600 sq cm
Area of the flower bed = a²
= 280²
= 78400 sq cm
Increase in the area = 115600 - 78400
= 37200 sq cm
Increase percentage
= (37200×100)/78400
= 47.44 %
I hope this helps you.
