Each side of a square flower bed is 3 m 80 cm long. It is extended by digging a strip
to
50 cm wide all around it. Find the area of the enlarged flower bed and also the increase
in the area of the flower bed.

Area of flower bed before extension = 14.44 sq m

If it is extended by digging a strip of 50 cm wide all around it, then the new side will be = 3.8 + 1.0 = 4.8 m

Area of the flower bed after extension = 4.8 × 4.8  

Area of enlarged flower bed = 23.04 sq m

Increase in the area of flower bed = 23.04 - 14.44

= 8.6 sq m
