For am equilateral triangle, the altitude(perpendicular) always passes through the midpoint of the opposite side, that is it starts from any vertex and falls at 15cm mark of the side.

Now it forms a Right triangle, having hypotenuse as 30cm and say base as 15cm. Now by using Pythagoras theorem for right triangle,

Hypotenuse ²= base² + perpendicular ²
