Each vertex of square ABCD is at the center of equal circles. Find the area of the shaded portion of the figure. Leave your answer in terms of pie.

By analysing the figure we can come to the conclusion that diameter of each circle is 2 units.

Therefore radius of the circle is 1 unit.

From the figure we understand that side of the square is equal to radii of two circles i.e. 2 units

Area of the inner square= 2*2= 4 units

Area of sector = theta/360 * πr^2

Area of the shaded region = Area of the square - 4 * 1/4π

= 4 - π

OR

= 4- 3.14 =0.86
