Hominid Fossil is the fossil of the extinct primates that belong to the family Hominidae, which may include an animal or a precursor of the modern man.

The earliest hominid fossil was found on the banks of the river Narmada in Madhya Pradesh in 1882.

So far only one hominid fossil has been found in India, but numerous tools used by the precursors and fossilized remains of extinct prehistoric animals have been discovered.

Fossils of precursors of modern man namely Sivapithecus and Ramapithecus, which are similar to the modern-day orangutan, have been found in Northern India.
