The name Haryana is found in the works of the 12th-century AD Apabhramsha writer Vibudh Shridhar (VS 1189–1230). The name Haryana has been derived from the Sanskrit words Hari (the Hindu god Vishnu) and ayana (home), meaning "the Abode of God".

Vibudh Shridhar or Vibudha Shridhara was an accomplished Apabhramsha writer and poet in North India. He is the first known Agrawal author. His writings of the 12th century AD gave origin to the name Haryana.

During Mahabharata Lord Krishna came to this place, so the state got its name from this legend. The name Haryana can be broken up into two parts. HARI which means Vishnu (or even Lord Krisha, since he was considered a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu) and ANA which means to come.
