Initially, the substances were classified into acids and bases based on their taste and effect on litmus paper. On the basis of this principle, those foods which taste b On the basis of this principle, the substances that taste sour and which make the blue litmus paper red, are called acids. The word acid comes from the Latin word 'acids', which means sour' (sour). Therefore, the substances in which the acid is present are sour.
