Early humans visited food-abundant places regularly often leaving a trace of their activities in the form of tools and artefacts. Thus, the more frequently people stayed at one place, the more artefacts were found.
400,000 - 125,000 years ago, artefacts are found in caves and open-air sites. In Europe in the Lazaret cave, there is evidence of shelters built against cave walls. Evidence of different food sources such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, eggs, and fish were also found.
Hearths in caves were evidence of the controlled use of fire. Fire in particular had many uses, it could be used to scare away animals, make tools, cook food and provide light and warmth.
