fluent in Punjabi and Urdu and had great oratory skills
Political career: Actively involved in politics from his teenage; joined the Shiromani Akali Dal
at 15; in 1938, he established the Praja Mandal, a political organisation allied
to the Congress party in Faridkot; Maharaja of Faridkot had an objection with
the opening of a Congress branch in the city; imprisoned for five years after
independence appointed as the Revenue Minister of then recently formed Patiala
and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU); made the Minister of Agriculture in 1951;
in 1972 became the Chief Minister of Punjab; joined Indira Gandhi's cabinet as
Minister of Home Affairs in 1980 and was elected to be the President in 1982
