I assume you meant why did some people living in caves paint on the walls, since few modern people still live in caves, and are generally not known for painting on the walls. Most of the famous cave paintings were done by so-called Cro-magnon people who lived in Europe from about 35,000 to 10,000 years ago. There may been more than one motivation for their artwork, depending on the artist, clan, or particular image. Many paintings depict animals, sometimes in hunting scenes, so they may have recorded hunts as a legacy. They may also, or alternatively, thought the images would bring good luck or appease spirits before a hunt, or helped help teach younger hunters. One factor, or maybe the biggest one, could also have just been creative expression, which still motivates artists today.
