Each of the planets in our solar system experiences its own unique weather. But one thing is certain: Only Earth has weather we can live with.

Let's take a weather tour of the solar system.....

Mercury

Mercury actually lacks an atmosphere. There are no clouds to shield the planet from intense cosmic radiation. As cosmic rays and micrometeorites hit the surface of the planet, atoms are ejected off of the rocks creating an exosphere made of ionized particles and dust. Solar winds interact with Mercury's magnetic field to form plasma tornadoes that bring hot solar winds to the surface. Clearly, this is not a place for humans to inhabit!

Mars

Unlike the common saying, 'men are from Mars', no man could survive on Mars without life support. Mars rotates around the Sun on a tilt, just like Earth so it also has seasons. In the summer, daytime temperatures can reach a warm 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which might not seem too bad. But, Mars has an extremely thin atmosphere, about 100 times less thick than Earth's atmosphere. With no atmosphere to hold the heat, temperatures quickly drop at night, falling to as low as -200 degrees Fahrenheit. That's colder than the coldest days in Antarctica on Earth.

Venus

Although right next-door, Venus has nearly the exact opposite atmospheric conditions compared to Mars. Venus has an extremely thick atmosphere made of carbon dioxide and pockets of sulfuric acid clouds, creating a dense atmosphere with about 90 times more pressure than that on Earth.

On Earth, increased levels of carbon dioxide are contributing to global warming, or an increase in global temperature. Venus takes this to a new extreme. With a thick carbon dioxide based atmosphere, heat from the Sun cannot escape, and surface temperatures can rise over 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

The surface of Venus is hidden by thick clouds of sulfuric acid and carbon dioxide

The top levels of the cloud experience winds over 220 mile per hour. Atmospheric lightening lights up the murky sky in the swirling clouds.

Jupiter

In 2017, Earth experienced intense back-to-back hurricanes, with hurricane Harvey devastating Texas and hurricane Irma hitting the Caribbean only weeks apart. But, these hurricanes are no match for the raging storms of Jupiter's red eye. This enormous swirling hurricane is the size of two Earths, with winds of 400 miles per hour. The storm has been raging for over 150 years and can be seen as a giant spot on the surface of the planet.

Jupiter has intense storms that have been going on for over 150 years

Jupiter is an enormous gas planet, with clouds made of hydrogen and helium, which surround a liquid core of hydrogen. The pressure from Jupiter's enormous size is so great that gaseous helium and hydrogen are condensed to liquids at Jupiter's surface. That great pressure also contributes to the insane temperatures, with the core reaching 43,000 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the temperature decreases quickly as you move into the swirling clouds of Jupiter's atmosphere with temperatures as low as -243 degrees Fahrenheit.

Saturn

Saturn is famed for its large rings and many moons. Like Jupiter, it is a gas giant with hydrogen and helium making up a cloudy atmosphere. Ammonium crystals in the atmosphere make it appear tan in color. At the north pole, Saturn has a unique wind system. Six jet streams are arranged in a hexagon pattern blowing 600 miles per hour in a counterclockwise direction.
