The Earthquake was caused by movement on a thrust fault,resulting from the tectonic pushing of India to Asia......The Gujrat quake is somehow unusual in that it occurred over 400 km to the South-East of the tectonic boundary separating Asia and India- Most occur in the north.

A devastating earthquake hitted India that morningin gujrat, killing more than 1,000 (based on news reports) as it toppled buildings and houses. The quake, measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale and epicentered around 20 km north-east of Bhuj in Gujarat, occurred at 08:46 IST (Indian Standard Time) according to the Indian Seismological Department.

The quake struck as many cities were celebrating India's 51st Republic Day. The tremble caused high-rise buildings to shake from New Delhi to Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkutta. Reports of aftershocks came in from around the country.

Prime Minister Vajpayee convened an emergency Cabinet meeting to assess the situation arising out of the powerful earthquake. Union Home Minister L. K. Advani is in Ahmedabad to carry out the relief efforts in earthquake struck areas. In New Delhi, Cabinet Secretary T. R. Prasad, who heads the disaster management group, coordinating the emergency relief measures for Gujarat.
