Certainly, there is an approach to correctly find the split of the middle term to factor a quadratic equation.

And before even we attempt to start factoring a quadratic, we need to check the discriminant of the quadratic

 {b}^{2}  - 4ac

If the discriminant is not a perfect square then we cannot use the factorization method.

The shortcut method is to write the product of first and last terms as product of prime factors.
