Answer:

Our country is proud of being the birth place of great heroes and immortal souls like Yogi Aurobindo, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhas, Sardar Patel, Savarkar, Rana Pratap, Sivaji, Saheed Bhagat Singh who have sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country.

Among them I prefer Mahatma Gandhi as my favorite hero. The place of Gandhi in the history of India is assured among the greatest personalities. In his period many intellectuals and brilliant people were born but in Mahatma all the qualities and virtues of sages are found to have been blended curiously. Only the above few personalities come in comparison with Gandhi so far his greatness is concerned.

As a student Mohandas was never brilliant. He was indifferent as a student. His school career was not very- successful. He went to London to qualify for the bar. When his relatives opposed the idea of going to a foreign land on account of their orthodoxy, Gandhi made a promise not to take meat and liquor there which he kept up faithfully.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

In England Gandhi developed a liking for imitating English Character. He made friendship with the English people. In the year 1893 when Gandhi returned to India with a degree in Law, he practiced law, pleaded in support of cases that were true and just. His taste for law as a profession diminished when he was invited to South Africa by an Indian merchant to assist him with legal advice.

In South Africa, Indians were being humiliated and treated with contempt. He had also been humiliated for travelling in a compartment reserved for the whites. In 1915 he drew his attention to the problems of the farmers and labourers of the country. Under Gandhi’s leadership the farmers waged a fight against the white Indigo planters in Champaran.

Gandhi succeeded in his fight against the Britishers on account of his great moral strength and for his great devotion to the principle of truth and non-violence. He called upon the people to non-cooperate with a government of satanic character. He was widely acclaimed as the father of the nation.

His life is an example of truth, non-violence and simplicity. His sacrifice for the unity of religious group and for the freedom of India is unique. We hardly find a man who is just equal to him. I love him from the core of my heart. Indeed he is my favorite national hero.
