Self reliance is a great quality which is very useful. A man who has confidence in his own powers can do much more than a diffident man of superior ability. A man who shrinks from tasks that he could easily perform, just because he is scared to fail. Self reliant people are willing to accept the post of difficulty and danger because they trust themselves. They are honoured by the world.

There are many examples in History to show the importance of self reliance. The Athenians refused to listen to the tempting terms offered by the enemy and relied on their own ability to save the Grecian liberty. Similarly the Romans showed self reliance in the war with Hannibal. Though they were defeated in three great battles they had confidence in their nation's strength. Hannibal was surprised to know that the ground on which his camp was pitched was bought for a good price at a Roman auction.

The spirit of self reliance inspired Sir Francis Drake and other Englishmen in their contest with the Spanish Armada. They got the news of the approaching hostile armament when they were playing a game of bowls. They did not get perturbed. They completed the game and then took measures to defend England. It was a feeling of self reliance made Hampton face the tyrannous exactions of the king.

Thus self reliance is a step to liberty. It is not possible to restrict a self reliant man. He is not bound. He relies on his own strength and is not dependent on anyone. He can succeed in any circumstances with the help of his own abilities.
