RESTORE AND SAVE WATER
Water is the most precious natural resource for all life forms on earth. The existence of life on Earth is dependent on the availability of potable water. With global warming issues and rapid expansion of the human population, saving water has become a crucial necessity of the hour. Misusing and overusing water resources can lead to depletion and shortage. Rainwater harvesting groundwater restoration techniques must be employed to conserve water effectively.
Water is as essential as air to sustain life on Earth. As much as 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water while only 2.5% of it is fit for human consumption. Out of this, only 1% of the water is accessible to human beings, while the rest is frozen in the form of ice caps and glaciers in places like Greenland and Antarctica. Startling facts, aren’t they? The United Nations observes The World Water Day every year on 22nd March.
The themes and initiatives surrounding this day involve the causes of clean water, hygiene and sanitation. NASA’s motto for finding extraterrestrial life in space has been “Follow the Water.” Scientists are looking at the possibility of sustaining life on Mars because of the existence of water on its surface. This mere fact tells us how immense the importance of water is in our lives.
Importance of Water
Water helps us carry out our day to day functions like cleaning, washing, cooking, bathing, brushing, shaving, etc. Think of what would happen to our personal hygiene if we weren’t able to take a relaxing shower. Without water, the air coolers that we make use of in summers to help us stay cool would not be able to function. One more important benefit of water in our life is that it serves as a means of transportation. Countries can carry out their trade because of the routes that seas and ocean provide for their ships. Water sports like swimming, diving and water skiing also serve as a source of entertainment for us.
Water is a necessity when it comes to the process of photosynthesis. Without water, there wouldn’t be any plants and trees, hence no oxygen. It also plays a vital role in agriculture. Water is needed to irrigate the crop fields and keep the livestock hydrated. The vast water bodies also act as homes to over millions of species of flora and fauna. The mechanism of the water cycle is responsible for keeping the Earth cool. Drinking water has its own benefits. A major constituent in the human body is undeniable, water. 73% of our brain is made up of water. Thus, drinking water gives us the power to focus and concentrate more.
Need to Save Water
The world population is increasing day by day, but the water on the planet remains the same. Hence, we have to conserve water and use it judiciously for everyone to get it. As parents of future generations, it is our moral duty to save water for our children. The failure of saving water now can lead to high costs or inflation and fatal health hazards later. There are already many places in the world, which are facing severe water scarcity and droughts. Because of water pollution, we are losing so many species of aquatic animals and thus, harming our eco-system. Conserving water means judiciously using water. Following are some ways through which we can become more responsible for our water resources-:
Close the tap while brushing your teeth and shaving. Don’t let the water keep running. One single person can save as much as 160 gallons of water a month by doing this.
Always check for tap leaks in your kitchen and bathrooms. Even a single leaking tap of water can lead to massive wastage of the limited resource and can cause your water bill to increase as much as two times.
Avoid taking a bath in a bathtub very often. It uses up around 30 to 40 gallons of water in one go. Instead, use buckets or short showers to stay clean and hygienic.
Rainwater harvesting is another useful and economical method that can be followed by people around the globe. It involves storing rainwater for future use and purposes instead of letting it runoff.
Every flush of a toilet uses about 9 to 10 litres of water. Avoid using it as a trash can. Do not flush tissue, cigarette butts, hair, chewing gum, etc.
Use energy-efficient washing machines. They use only about 7 gallons of water per load compared to the traditional washing machines, which use a whopping 54 gallons per load.
Other water conservation methods can include insulting water pipes, recycling water, etc.
