Children’s Day is celebrated all over Indiaon the 14th of Novemberevery year. The first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was born on this day. Pandit Nehru loved children very much, and wanted to be with them always. The children too loved him and called him “Chacha Nehru” affectionately. Thus 14th November is celebrated as Children’s Day in his memory.
In my school too Children’s Day is celebrated very gaily. All the students wait for this day eagerly. We have no studies that day and wear our colorful dresses to the school instead of our uniforms. The teachers spend weeks in preparing a cultural programme for us.
This year the programme was very good and we children loved every minute of it. A group of teachers dressed in colorful sarees sang a welcome song. Then there was a very funny parody teaching us. After that our teachers danced to a Punjabi folk song.
But the best item of all was a short skit that they staged. To our surprise, we saw a group of nine or ten young teachers running up to the stage in the school uniform. They showed a typical classroom scene in which all the student are talking and the teacher is scolding them. It made us realise how much we really pester our teachers in the classroom. It also made us laugh till our sides ached.
There were one or two songs more and then the teachers came on stage to tell us how much they loved us and how they enjoyed being our teachers. We were all very moved. They also distributed sweets to us.
All the students were talking about how special this Children’s Day was for us. We enjoyed it very much and school more.
