easy way to say whether element is metal or Non metal

if you are asking in reference to class 10

then if the number of valency electrons is less it is metal because the metals have a tendency to lose electrons ( and the losing of electrons will be easy only with less number of valency electrons)

i would say it is better to study the modern periodic table in some kind of a trick.
